SUBJECT: Vaping and EVALI (CME)

SPEAKER: Monica L. White, MPH, Supervising Public Health Educator, San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Unit

This forum will define vaping and give overview of vaping products, review harmful health effects of vaping, including EVALI and youth nicotine addiction, review diagnosis and treatment of EVALI, discuss current statistics on e-cigarette use and vaping-related illnesses, and discuss current laws on vaping.

  • UpToDate CME:  By searching uptodate for your clinical questions, you can accumulate CME credits by claiming CME credit. It is required to register for Uptodate using DignityHealth computers.  To redeem credits, access your CME Credit log by clicking CME or CE in the upper right after logging into your account. It is required to complete three step learning cycle to process your earned CME credits.     
  • ClincalKey CME: By searching ClinicalKey, the CME credits are provided by the Elsevier Office of CME. It is required to register for ClinicalKey on Dignity Health computers first.
  • CDC Infection Control CME:CDC and Medscape have launched a series of six CME/CE activities addressing the key issues surrounding infection prevention in healthcare facilities
  • JAMA Leaning CME:  In 2017, physician subscribers to any JAMA Network journal are eligible for the JN Learning CME program. As a benefit of membership, AMA members are also eligible for CME offered as part of the JN Learning program, which encompasses CME quizzes from all JAMA Network journals.
  • NEJM Weekly CME : Explore the NEJM Review articles and earn up to 50 AMA PRA category 1 Credits or AAFP Prescribed credits per completed exam plus ABIM MOC points. 
  • Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics: Required to supply your email address to the publisher to verify your affiliation with SJMC.
  • Medscape CME:  Free CME activities on Medscape Education are offered for physicians and other health professionals. 
  • MyFreeCME for physicians: CME/CPE/CE courses are offered vor various specialities w/ or w/o fees. 
  • Baylor College of Medicine:  A wide variety of medical specialties are represented in these activities. Online enduring material activity listings offer several viewing options, as well as electronic posttest, registration, evaluation, and certificate issue. All online enduring material activities are offered at no cost to the participant.
  • Cleveland Clinic Center for Continuing Education: The largest and most diverse CME programs are offered: webcast, text based CME, Podcast and live events.  This program is certified by Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and awarded about 85,000 certificates for online CME in 2010.
  • UPMC Physician Resources: UPMC Physician Resources offers information and continuing medical education. There are free CME courses by specialites that offer 0.75 CE contac hours.
  • AAFP CME: The AAFP offers many live and home-study CME opportunities. In addition, both AAFP journals (American Family Physicians and Family Practice Management) offer CMEs (an average of 90 hrs/year for AFP and 20 hrs/year for FPM). Membership is required for free CME courses.
  • JOURNAL based CME: Many journals such as NEJMJAMA, Medical Letter, etc. offer CME credits by including CME articles and having subscribers register for CME in their websites. Individual online subscription is required:

CE Resources for Nursing

In the State of California, Registered nurses are required by law to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years. SJMC Medical Library has print and electronic resources available for our nurses to help meet their CE requirements.
